The Stigma of Substance Use Disorder
Lecture #4

Presented by: William Stauffer, LSW, CADC

Feeling stigmatized can negatively impact the willingness of individuals with a substance use disorder to seek treatment. Clinicians can set an example on how language can destigmatize the disease of addiction, even when patients use stigmatizing slang themselves.  In this lecture, we will explore stigma and its consequences, consider the implications of data on stigma across our society, examine implicit bias and its ramifications, and learn to apply proactive solutions in combating the stigma associated with substance and alcohol use disorders.
